On one of the hottest days of the year, I made the unwise decision to have a London day out. Tower of London and Tower Bridge were my choice for the day because they are literally in the same area. I have just registered with Historic Royal Palaces (I’m very proud of this membership btw lol) and Tower of London is one of the free visits as a member. For Tower Bridge, because I live in Tower Hamlets borough, it cost me only a pound to visit. Can you imagine? £1 only!
I spent the day with Bobo as part of educating him on British History. He is 13 and is at that age where he is glued to his phone and games. So Mr E and I are trying to find the balance between fun and inculcating educative activities.
Our first stop for our London day out was the Tower of London. Tower of London is British heritage at its finest and is even a World Heritage site. We explored the Crown Jewels (this room of Jewels is honestly goals). Her Majesty the Queen is not playing at all when it comes to jewels. The crown jewels have been stored since 1661 and displayed in the Tower of London. They are still used by the Queen for important national ceremonies.
We met the Yeoman Warders and I was so excited to meet a female Yeoman Warder. I was up close and personal with the famous Tower of London ravens as well. They are known as the guardians of the Tower. We were advised not to feed them as they could associate it with a threat and could bite.
Did you know that the Tower of London will fall if six of the resident ravens leave the fortress? Currently there are 7 so we have to hope 6 don’t leave! Myth or reality? You decide.
We explored the Medieval Palace, Bloody Tower, the Chapel and White Tower. We were also lucky to watch a change of guards. It was quite a fascinating day for Bobo and I.
Without the HRP membership, it costs £25 for adults and £12.50 for kids. Tickets are restricted so it is recommended you book a spot. It is definitely a very educative day out for kids. Also, if you are like me and you love a bit of British history, I highly recommend!
Lunch stop: Coppa Club Tower Bridge
Coppa Club has slowly become one of my favourite food spots in London. So far, I have had breakfast, brunch and lunch there and I highly rate it! We had no reservation and walked in, had the option of sitting out on the terrace or inside. Since it was boiling hot, I chose to sit just by the door instead of the terrace.
I had the Club Caesar salad and crispy fried squid on the side. Bobo had a pizza. To drink, I had a Pornstar Martini and Bobo had some juice.
We were offered sticky toffee pudding for free. I wanted to believe it was because I was a regular but no, it was a spare order they got wrong for someone else LOL.
On our last stop of the Londonest London day ever, we went on a tour of Tower Bridge. It was shocking that if you lived in my borough, it costs only £1 for the “community” ticket. Other boroughs eligible for the £1 ticket are Southwark and the City of London. Therefore, I highly recommend if you live in these boroughs. We still had toreserve spots online
As evidence, we had to show a picture ID and evidence of address. These are just to make sure you are a part of the community. We went up the 206 steps, which were definitely a lot. It tested my failing fitness and reminded me to step up my workouts. There are video montages at the top and we learnt a little Tower Bridge history lesson.
The most fun thing for me was standing on the iconic glass floor which was over the Thames. I am scared of heights, which I tend to forget until I’m up in the air. So, initially I was sure I’d never walk on the glass floor but the staff encouraged me. There was a boat passing through and it meant I’d be standing over the Thames with a boat passing through. Sucked it up and walked on it! Hi 5 Bugo!! It was definitely worth sucking up my fear of heights. We visited the engine rooms and of course the souvenir shop where I purchased a London souvenir. Just like a tourist haha!
Ticket prices outside the boroughs mentioned are £10.60 for adults and £5.30 for children. Students, disabled visitors and seniors pay £7.90. Disabled kids pay £4! There are also family tickets available.
London Day Out: Tower of London and Tower Bridge
I have lived in London for about 6 and half years. However, I will admit that I have only started exploring it more since lockdown. I have always been interested in British history but from afar. London is full of so much culture and history and it has taken me all this time to find it.
Sometimes I wonder if I’d be exploring London this much if the pandemic did not happen. I doubt it. I would probably have been in another country now, exploring it. While that is really amazing, I am really grateful I get to explore my own backyard more. Imagine going up one of the most famous bridges in the world for only £1?! I still cannot get over it.
Anyway, this is where I recommend a London day out if you live in London. If you are in a different city or country, explore it now that we are not travelling internationally. Until my next mooch around the city…..
