When you think of Amsterdam, I’m certain romance is very far from one’s mind. Amsterdam is undoubtedly beautiful and one of the most visited European cities. However, I am sure that most people, couples even, who visit are not there for romance. I was determined to enjoy Amsterdam a bit differently this time; hence my theme for this romantic travel guide to Amsterdam.
Since becoming parents, Mr E and I had not travelled on our own so we thought my birthday would be a good opportunity to do so. We picked Amsterdam because we had already been and flights were not too pricey for a peak summer bank holiday weekend.
Romantic travel guide to Amsterdam: Exploring Amsterdam
Amsterdam is best explored by walking or cycling. It is one of those European cities where bicycles seem to be more popular than cars. The canals and alleys weave in and out of each other, while people go about their business. To get the best out of your Amsterdam trip, the I Amsterdam city card could be useful. It covers all the main attractions so it is worth looking into.
Romantic travel guide to Amsterdam:
Where to stay in Amsterdam
Mr E and I visited Amsterdam years ago. On that trip, we did all the popular touristy things and had the best time. Our hotel was very central – Max Brown in Canal District which was perfect for that trip. This time, we picked something and somewhere a little different.
Boutique Hotel View
Our hotel was a gem. It definitely wasn’t the fanciest we’d stayed at but one that was quite special. Boutique Hotel View is located in one of the famous canal building, built around 1889. It has only 14 rooms and sits in front of the age-old canal in Leidsekade. One of the things I absolutely loved about our hotel was the service from the hotel manager, Natalie. She was just so lovely and kind. Natalie gave us a brief history of the hotel; told us where we could get really good brunch that didn’t feel too touristy and was just generally a nice lady.
We stayed in room 203, which was the room with canal view. The hotel is advertised as child friendly; however, I don’t think I’d be comfortable staying there with my baby. Although our room was huge and would easily fit her cot (& and extra bed), the stairs were quite steep. I did see a family with their baby and wondered how they carried the baby up and down the stairs; considering that I almost fell down twice.
Hotel Boutique view is in a lovely location with restaurants close by in the famous Leidseplein. There are a lot of landmarks within walking distance. I’d recommend for those who want a taste of Amsterdam but don’t want to be right in the middle of things.
Romantic travel guide to Amsterdam: What to do in Amsterdam
I was quite determined to visit new places but did not want the trip to feel like I had to see everything. So we mapped things out very carefully and everywhere we visited was within walking distance of our hotel.
Vondelpark
I had always wanted to visit this park right in the heart of the city. This time, we made sure to stroll down and it was worth the dream. Once I realised Vondelpark was only 11 mins walk from our hotel, I looked at the weather app and picked the sunniest afternoon of our trip to visit. I do love rain I’ll admit; however visiting a park while it’s raining is not my vibe at all.
We got to the park early afternoon and walked around. There were ducks swimming in the pond and people scattered around either sunbathing or having picnics. Then, there was us; just walking hand in hand while taking it all in. We soon found a bench and did what we do best; sat and people watched. Often, we’d get the odd ask if we’d like our picture taken. After a few “no, thank yous”, we decided to pose for some shots and absolutely loved the photos.
Flower Market - Bloemenmarkt
Since it was my birthday weekend, I wanted to get some flowers for birthday photos. Yes, I am that girl who does a photoshoot for every birthday. I mean, it’s never too grand. Just me in a new dress usually and Mr E snapping some photos to commemorate the day. We walked to the floating flower market and purchased some stalks. Next, it was time to put them together in a bouquet. I went for a soft pink and white roses; I added some white tulips as well. The florist made the most beautiful bouquet, which I carried all around Amsterdam from that minute lol.
A flower market date is actually one of the most romantic things to do. I find it calming, fun, chatty and you get a beautiful bouquet at the end. One of our first dates when we moved to London was to a flower market in Nottinghill. It is still one of my favourite dates of all time.
Sunset watch
Watching the sunset over the canal is one of the most beautiful sights to behold. We had no idea if our balcony was sunset or sunrise facing; so imagine my excitement when it was time for sunset. I mean, I don’t mind sunrise at all but this trip was not one for waking up early to catch the sunrise so I was glad to have caught 2 beautiful sunsets in the 3 days we were there. Sunset was so beautiful. We got back to the hotel each evening in time to watch it and always felt grateful for our room choice.
Canal Cruise
I always say that if there is a canal in the city, a canal cruise is a must. For lovers of history, a canal cruise is most likely the best way to see nooks and crannies that the feet won’t get to. This is the same with Bruges, Venice and the other canal cities. Amsterdam has a canal culture and there is no type of canal cruise you won’t find. From the group ones to the private romantic ones to the party ones, there is something for everyone. Amsterdam is a very scenic and serene city so a canal cruise feels even more special.
Since I have only ever been to Amsterdam with Mr E, our canal cruises are always private and romantic. Next time, I’ll pick one at sunset as I think it would be the most special of them all.
Explore Leidseplein
Leidseplein is one of the liveliest squares in Amsterdam, it is definitely the most fun. We spent a lot of our evenings walking around and eating in the al fresco restaurants. It is very vibey and this is where I feel like the locals hang out as it felt quite authentic Dutch. There is a buzzing nightlife around the Square and even until midnight, the restaurants are full. In the summer, there are street performers and buskers around; just what you would expect from a lively city centre. It is often compared with Dam Square but while Leidseplein is not as touristy, Dam Square is where every tourist goes.
We visited Bella Marina, an Italian restaurant which was still open at 10pm one night. The restaurant is worth a mention as the food was very yummy and service was impeccable.
Dam Square
The Square to visit in Amsterdam especially if it is your first time in the city . Dam Square feels central; like where everyone meets and where everything points to. I find it really romantic and you’ll often find a musician belting out romantic tunes accompanied by piano. You’ll find couples cuddling and slow dancing; and just loving on each other.
The 1st time we visited Amsterdam, we stayed just off the Square in the Max Brown hotel. So most of our evening strolls would weave in and out of the streets around. It is definitely very quaint and one of those places you stand and take it all in. Just like Leidseplein, there are restaurants, hotels and everything else around Dam Square. The major train station which goes to and fro Amsterdam is by the square as well.
One of my favourite spots was just off Dam Square with the most perfect row of the canal houses. It’s actually a busy spot from where canal cruises start but was closed on the day. Mr E and I sat there and just watched the ducks go by; taking photos and just enjoying the vibe.
De Wallen: Red Light District
Would this be an Amsterdam city guide without a mention of the Red Light District? Since prostitution is legal in the Netherlands, it is quite a normal business part of the city. However, there have been many write ups on the ethics behind it; from stories of trafficking, unfair treatment of the women and the general disrespect of the workers.
De Wallen is the oldest red light district in Amsterdam. It dates all the way back to medieval times and was always popular thanks to its proximity to the harbour.
This might not seem like a romantic thing to do in Amsterdam; however, I think that one cannot go to Amsterdam without a peek. Also, it could well be romantic if you are that type of couple. This is a judgement free zone so if it’s your vibe, enjoy!
A visit to the Museum
Amsterdam has some beautiful museums. In fact, some people go to Amsterdam just to visit the museums. The most popular ones are Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh and Anne Frank house.
Rijksmuseum
It is one of the most popular museums in Europe and has about 800 years of Dutch history. There are pieces from Van Gogh, Rembrandt and Vermeer. It is open daily between 9am to 5pm and one for Art lovers. One of the most popular works is Rembrandt’s The Night Watch (1642).
Van Gogh Museum
This museum is dedicated to the works of Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries like Claude Monet and Paul Signac. It is in the famous museum square, close to Rijksmuseum.
I will admit that I’m not well versed in art but I find museum dates really romantic. Both Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh museum are for history lovers and couples who love art.
Anne Frank House
By far the most harrowing experience and I’m not sure why I have added it to this romantic travel guide to Amsterdam. However, a visit to Anne Frank House is an education on its own and is a must visit in Amsterdam.
Romantic travel guide to Amsterdam: Where to eat in Amsterdam
Brunch at Eggs Benaddicted
I was looking for a brunch spot close to the hotel and my google search landed on Eggs Benaddicted. It is located along the romantic Prinsengracht canal. We got there as it was raining and initially got indoor seating. After a while, we moved to the terrace and enjoyed our locly lunch. We watched as it rained off and on, people strolling by and boats cruising the canal. It was a pretty perfect, romantic afternoon in Amsterdam.
Grand Café Lido
We stumbled upon this one on our way back from Vondelpark. It was alfresco seating that faced the canal and we just though it was cute. I always find alfresco lunches quite romantic. Something about sitting outside, watching the world go by with the love of your life while eating lunch.
Mannekenpis
When a shop boldly advertises that they serve the best fries in the Netherlands, you know you have to try it. They have over 20 different sauces to choose from and there’s always a queue. We visited Mannekenpis for the first time a few years ago and we had to agree that the fries were really yummy. On this recent trip, of course we went back and once again, it did not disappoint.
Van Wonderen Stroopwafels
This one was strictly due to instagram. I had spotted the viral photos of the waffles over the canal, I added Van wonderen stroopwafels to my list. We headed there and bought 2 large sizes at €15 each which I thought was incredibly pricey. It was very yummy and large and I guess you pay for the hype as well.
FAQs
Is Amsterdam Romantic?
This was a very interesting question I received a few times. I can say that every city has its charm and can be romantic depending on how you romanticise life. Personally, I think Amsterdam has a romantic angle to it. Any city that has a canal running through it will always feel romantic to me. Maybe it’s not quite up there with Venice and Bruges (I found Bruges incredibly romantic) but there is definitely something about Amsterdam.
How many days are enough for Amsterdam?
I have visited Amsterdam for 5 days and on another trip, 2 days. The 2 full days were actually enough for a short city break to see a lot of the city. However, I’d say at least 3 days are perfect.
Is Amsterdam expensive?
Probably as expensive as any typical, popular European city. I found it slightly cheaper than London and Venice but more expensive than Dubrovnik for example. However, Amsterdam, like any city can be done on any budget. I would not say that it is particularly expensive but don’t expect dirt cheap prices.
Romantic travel guide to Amsterdam
Amsterdam will always be special to us. I know a lot of people go for the partying, nightlife, the red light district and coffee shops. However, there is a serenity and scenic vibe that make Amsterdam romantic. We have always found it sweet and soft; and maybe it is just me who somehow finds everywhere romantic. However, Amsterdam has a charm that I think couples are drawn to as well.
