The best things to do for Summer in London

If you ask most people, they will say that the best time to visit London is in the summer. I am obviously of the opinion that the best time to visit London is anytime in the year. However, for the purpose of this blog post, let’s focus on summer as I share 25 of the best things to do for summer in London.

The activities are a perfect mix of family friendly things to do in London and a few are adult specific. I will let you decide what you think works better with or without the kids. Some of the suggestions are free and others, you have to pay for.

So when does summer in London start? There is the argument that summer doesn’t officially start until Buckingham Palace opens its doors in the final week of July. But how can we wait until July to enjoy summer? I say summer starts from May’s 2nd Bank Holiday and goes all the way till the August Bank Holiday. Those are my dates and I am sticking to them LOL. I love this time so much and I actually try not to travel during this period so I can spend as much time in the country. The sun is (sometimes) out, Londoners are actually less grumpy and the days are longer.

25 of the best things to do for Summer in London

1. Wimbledon

It might be a bit of a cheat sheet to start with Wimbledon because we all know how hard it is to score that ticket. The reality is that a Wimbledon ticket is one of the golden invites in London Summer. Mr E and I enter the ballot every year with zero success rate. However, our luck changed last year. I managed to get tickets on the website via the secondary sale and it was the absolute best Saturday ever.  The atmosphere is wonderful, strawberries and cream are sold everywhere and the pimms are flowing. Just another perfect British summer day.

2. A boat tour of the Thames river

London has a scenic waterway on the Thames and one of the best way to explore is a tour. I absolutely enjoyed the one we did a few years ago with GoBoat London. The tour started from Paddington and we rowed our way through Little Venice, Regent’s canal, Maida Hill and even up to Camden Lock. It is perfect for a family friendly day out in London and has the capacity of up to 8 people including babies. Kids are provided with their own life jackets and pets are allowed too. Other locations to sail from are Kingston and Canary Wharf.

3. London Photo walk

This was my favourite thing to do post pandemic when everything was still volatile. We’d pick a part of London and just walk and walk. The most beautiful walks were around Notting hill, The city of London and Covent Garden. It is a free activity and one that is perfect regardless of age. London makes you feel like you are in a movie and I genuinely find it picturesque.

Safety Tip: Hold unto your phone and camera really tight and be conscious of movements around you. Like most big cities, theft is always something to be conscious about.

4. Buckingham Palace Tour

Until last summer, I had no idea that anyone could tour Buckingham Palace. My friend who was visiting London for the summer had seen a video on Instagram and sent it to me. I followed the link and purchased our tickets immediately. The Palace is open to the public in the summer. For a price, you can tour the state rooms, galleries, garden and royal mews. It is a lovely tour and we got to walk around the rooms you only see on TV and even that grand staircase. This is one that is definitely worth the expensive fee.

5. Al Fresco brunch

If there is one thing that has expanded post pandemic is the number of al fresco restaurants that has popped up since.

Don’t ask me if café culture was copied from the French, I am not here to start a war lol. I am just very glad that a lot of restaurants now have terraces for the perfect summer brunching experience. Some of my favourites are Harry’s Knightsbridge and The Ivy Chelsea Garden.

Just make sure you request the tables outside.

6. Flower Markets

Visiting a flower market is such a romantic thing to do. I love that there are so many independent flower shops dotted all around London. There is the popular Columbia Road Flower Market which I genuinely think is lovely. However, you will find lots of flower stalls in Notting Hill, Spitalfields, Chelsea, Covent Garden etc. Summer is the best time for roses, and you are able to buy them in different colours. The best thing about flower markets is that they are an easy way to get out of the house. Perfect for a first date, day out with kids or a solo wander.

7. Picnic in one of London’s Parks

If there is one thing London is blessed with, it’s the abundance of gorgeous parks. Summer is the best time to enjoy a walk through one of these numerous green spaces. It is also perfect for picnics in the park. I remember during lockdown when we could not do much at all. Picnics in my nearby park made me so excited especially as we had the most gorgeous summer that year. The best thing about London parks is that there are so many family friendly ones like Kensington gardens with its big play ground for kids.

There are romantic ones like Primrose hill (part of Regent’s Park) which often features on TV shows. I find it incredibly romantic and it adds that you can see the stunning London skyline.

8. Food Markets

Just like the flower markets, London has a fantastic food market scene. The best time to experience them are in summer and at Christmas. When I lived in London, we used to go to the Southbank food market every summer and it was such a vibe. I really love that part of London and it’s a lovely stroll on the embankment afterwards. The foot stalls line the street and there are different cuisines to choose from. Nearby, there is a water fountain where kids can play while the parents watch them from close distance. There are also pubs and restaurants around there, so it is a really fun day out for families or friend groups.

9. Go to a Football Game

London is home to some of the best football clubs in Europe and in summer, it’s easier to get tickets to friendlies. We are massive Arsenal fans and look forward to the Emirates cup in the summer. The games are not as intense so they are perfect for a relaxed family day out. Other popular London clubs are Chelsea, West Ham United, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur etc. However, major points to you if you can watch an Arsenal game aka the best club in London hehe

10. Visit one of London’s Street bookshops

My favourite London bookshops are those in Covent Garden. The famous Cecil Court which is just off Leicester square lined with so many bookshops. I find it lovely skipping through the street which makes you feel like you are in a previous century. In the summer, you’ll find second-hand books sold in little nooks in Nottinghill. This is also one of my favourite areas to visit in London.

11. A night out to London’s West End

The nights are much warmer so this is the best time to explore Soho’s nightlife. However, a trip to one of the West End shows is a must. There are recurring shows like Lion King, Les Misérables, Wicked etc. Also there are so many new ones that are introduced each year. I absolutely love that part of London and will often get lost wandering Soho to Covent Garden.

12. Notting Hill Carnival

I always say that Notting hill carnival, to me, signals the end of summer. It is usually the bank holiday weekend in August and takes place on the streets of Notting hill. Carnival is fun and is a great representation of the West Indian culture on display. I love that it pays homage to the early dwellers of Notting hill who were from the Caribbean islands.

13. Hampstead Heath

You notice that I have separated Hampstead Heath from the other London parks? This is because Hampstead is a vibe in summer. Yes, the heath is glorious, and it is where you will find one of London’s hidden gems, The Hill Garden and Pergola. There is the world-famous Hampstead Creperie and numerous historic pubs and bars dotted around. I find that in summer, just a walk around this neighbourhood feels like good vibes and it is one place I always thought I’d like to live.

Note: The Hampstead Heath swimming ponds are open all year round; however, it is freezing no matter what time of the year.

14. Visit one of London’s Lidos

Maybe I was not paying attention before, but it seems that in recent years, Londoners have fallen in love with Lidos. Hampstead heath has its ponds but there are plenty other lidos to check out in summer months. My favourite is Parliament Hill Lido which gives you the gorgeous views and has a children’s paddling pool and café as well. The only downside is that it is unheated so unless it’s a heat wave, you won’t catch me there. Others are Serpentine Lido in Hyde Park which makes me chuckle because you could be swimming with local swans and ducks.

Heated Lidos and outdoor pools include Park Road Leisure centre in Crouch End; it has a children’s pool and café too. Oasis Sports centre in Covent Garden, Charlton Lido in Charlton which also has a café and fitness studio and London fields Lido in London Fields.

15. Shopping in Mayfair or Knightsbridge

Or should I say window shopping in Mayfair or Knightsbridge. Mayfair is one of the most exclusive parts of London. It is also where you will find a string of designer shops from Bond Street to Oxford street to Regent street. The only other area that rivals this is Knightsbridge. I think Mayfair edges it out a bit more because it has a lot of restaurants and bars that are perfect for a summer meet up. However, Knightsbridge has Harrods and Harvey Nichols so I will leave this one for you to decide. Both parts of London will give you the boujie experience of shopping in London.

16. Emirates Cable Car

The Emirates Cable car links the Royal docks to the Greenwich Peninsula and you get to float over the gorgeous London skyline and river Thames. It is a unique way to explore London and if you are not terrified of heights, quite an epic thing to do in London as well. A few of the epic things to spot are the O2, Thames river, the cityscape especially around the Docklands and of course, the royal docks with all the cruise liners and docked ships.

17. Rooftop bar and Beer gardens

If there is one thing that England does really well, it’s a Beer Garden. And if there is one thing that London does extremely well, its rooftop drinks with a view of the London skyline.

I find that rooftop bars are more grown up and better for dates etc while beer gardens are more family friendly; they tend to be pubs that have a garden at the back. Some come with play areas for kids as well.

A few of my favourites are:

  • The Fence, Farringdon
  • The Duke of Kent, Ealing (family & dog friendly) – gorgeous historic pub with baby changing facilities
  • The Plough Inn, Ealing (family friendly)
  • The Flask, Highgate
18. Horse ride in Hyde Park

Did you know that you could ride a horse in Hyde park for a fee? This is yet another piece of information I recently discovered. When I say that London can be so boujie, this is what I mean lol. On offer are semi-private and private rides; as well as Arena lessons. Children under 7 must be booked into private rides. But how cool is this experience?!

The best time for this is in the summer especially if you are a beginner. I think the clear skies and warm weather will make for an enjoyable experience. I must admit that this is one I am yet to experience but I have seen riders in Hyde park and used to wonder if people casually owned horses in London. Imagine my surprise when I found out that anyone could have the same experience at Hyde Park Stables?! Maybe I will add it to my list for next summer.

19. Open air cinema and theatre

We went to the open air cinema just after lockdown and loved it. I’m not sure if it was introduced just then but it’s a fab idea. I love that most of the day movies are family friendly so it can be the perfect London day out with kids. The evenings usually come with romantic movie showings for date nights. In my experience, there is usually something for everyone to enjoy regardless of age.

A few popular ones are Regent’s Park Open air theatre and Luna Cinema with venues across the city. Then there is the Rooftop Film Club in Stratford and Peckham.

20. Ice cream!

Summer is the only time ice cream vans are allowed to drive around with their loud music. Don’t get me started on the ridiculously expensive ice creams but hey that’s what summer is about. Right?! Especially if you have kids, this is the ultimate treat for those park days out. One memory that always pops up is a day out in Kensington gardens and queuing to buy ice-cream from the truck. I always remember how the weather was lovely and we were all chatting and trying to figure out if a popsicle would be better. Oh wonderful times!

21. Kew Gardens

There are very few places in London that you can visit all weather round. Kew gardens is one of them. However, it is especially lovely in summer. Who would not want to walk around a gigantic botanical garden as the sun is shining? Kew gardens is a scientific garden with a very diverse living plant collection.  There is a variety of restaurants and cafes to eat and drink; there is also the opportunity to shop. It is open everyday between 10am and 4pm and it is a lovely family friendly day out.

Things to do just outside London

22. PYO farms

What is summer without a visit to a “Pick Your Own” farm?! Now, we all know how much I love London but the best farms are just outside the city. I mean, one would argue that they are part of Greater London but once they are out of the E, EC, W, WC, N, NW, SE, SW postcodes, they seize to be London to me. Don’t arrest me please haha! Anyway if you can make your way out of London, head to Cammas Farm which we have been to so many times. You have the summer to pick berries – strawberries, blackberries etc and then towards the end of summer, you can pick sunflowers too.

23. A day trip

Perhaps you are not in the mood to pick your own flowers or fruits, then head out of the city for a day trip. Some of my favourite London day trips are to Cambridge, Bath, Oxford, Winchester and Canterbury. The best thing about London is that it is wonderfully located for easy train trips to so many lovely places. I have written a wonderful post about my favourite day trips from London for inspo.

If you are feeling even more adventurous, you can get the Eurostar to Paris, Belgium or Amsterdam. Now, I have not attempted this because a day is never enough to visit these places but why not if that is your vibe?! Head out on the morning train and head back on the evening train.

24. Visit a Lavender field

Summer is flower season in the UK and one of the best summer activities is a visit to a Lavender field. My favourite one that is really close to London is Mayfield Lavender Farm in Surrey. It’s another perfect day out for families and I love that there is a beer garden for food as well. You can purchase all sorts of Lavender products and the best thing is that there is free parking if you drive. You can catch the train from London Victoria to West Croydon or Sutton and then a taxi from the train station to the lavender farm.

25. The Royal Ascot

I saved the best for last, didn’t I?!

This is usually my highlight of the summer season. Mr E and I have now attended Ascot 3 times and it is fast becoming a tradition for us. We tend to go on the last day; which is the Saturday. Mr E is there for the races, I am there for the fashion and the vibes. Ascot is such a fun day out. You get to see the Royals, celebrities just walking about, people impeccably dressed and the atmosphere is so fun.
