10 things to do in Prague

Narrowing down 10 things to do in Prague was actually not as daunting as one would imagine. Why Prague? No reason in particular. The only thing I knew was that I had to visit Prague when the weather was favourable. My sister in law had told me about the freezing experience they had in December so I definitely kept that in mind. We picked the end of summer to visit for two reasons – less crowd and still warm.

We also had a big trip coming up a few months later so we knew that whatever destination we picked, it had to be as inexpensive as possible. Enter Prague, Czech Republic!!

Prague is very classic and timeless. We felt like we were in a Spartacus episode or one of those medieval movies. So beautiful and effortless; like it was not trying to be anybody else and would rather preserve its culture. Even the newer monuments littered across the city had an old feel to them. There was definitely a rule that every builder seemed to have followed – be classic or you don’t belong here! And we loved it!!!!

So what exactly did we get up to in Prague?

“Classic Beauty of Prague. That old town, timeless feel that draws you in and you instantly fall deep….” – Bugo Echem

1. Head to Wenceslas Square

We started our exploring by heading to the Wenceslas Square to see the statue of St Wenceslas and to admire the square’s little garden pockets.

2. Drink beer at the oldest pub in Prague

Ok, Mr E drank the beer, I had a glass of wine but you get my drift. Built in 1375, we walked into the pub and we were transported back in time for the experience. It still maintains its medieval charm. It is dark in there and relies on lamps to provide light, you are served your food without cutlery and expected to eat with your hands and even the waiters are dressed in medieval costumes! Bizarre at first but once you warm up to the vibe, pretty cool!!

3. Walk on St Charles Bridge

We walked on St Charles Bridge that goes across the Vltava river and links the old and new towns together. We stopped to admire the baroque statues on different sides of the bridge. The statues were of saints and the city’s reference to Christianity was very present through them.

4. Take a picture with the John Lennon wall as backdrop

Off the bridge, on the corner was the John Lennon wall with graffiti inspired by lyrics from his songs. It is a cool spot for Lennon lovers or if you are just nosy like me!

5. Check out Prague Castle

Walked up the millions of stairs to find the Prague Castle. Perhaps there is another route to get there? Hmmmm! Anyway, the long walk was worth it. It is currently the official seat of the President of Czech Republic. There were so many beautiful architectural buildings within and around the castle. We hung around the grounds for a while, as we knew that a change of guards was imminent and we waited until we watched it. Happy Bugo! lol

6. St Vitus Cathedral

We visited St Vitus Cathedral, which is situated on the grounds of the Prague Castle. Another grand gothic architectural structure. It is a Catholic church and is the current seat of the Archbishop of Prague. Inside the church is the chapel of St Wenceslas, which houses his relics. The Cathedral is also the burial site of many sovereigns and noblemen.

On our way out, we found the Prague Castle Garden. Just beautiful greenery that feels like you are inside a maze and it opens up to a skyline view of the city.

7. Look out for the Astronomical Clock

We walked to the Old Town Square to see the Astronomical Clock but this one was a fail! The clock was undergoing renovations so most of it was covered up and cordoned off.

8. Visit the Head of Franz Kafka

Visited the silver statue of the head of Prague born, Franz Kafka who died in 1924. It is situated just in front of the Quadrio Shopping Centre. This is one of the more recent monuments in Prague as it was done in 2014.

9. Visit Prague zoo (maybe......actually, don't!)

Visited Prague zoo. The thing about Prague is that tbh, for sight seeing, you can see a lot in one day (which we did) so by day 2, there was not much else to do and our hotel concierge suggested a visit to the world famous Prague zoo.

The zoo was a massive fail and for the first time, we regretted going to somewhere with so much importance.

I am usually not a fan of zoos because I rather see animals in their natural habitat and not caged up, which meant that I did not really enjoy the experience. I made a mental note to myself to avoid zoos going forward!

10. Tančící Dum aka Dancing House

Last stop was the Tančící Dum aka Dancing House. An unconventionally designed building that appears bent so it looks like it is dancing. It has its controversy by being different to the typical gothic and baroque structures in Prague and has been standing for over 20 years and I wonder how long the building will last?

Possibly, here to stay now. We’ll see!

So, there you have it! 10 things to do in Prague, Czech Republic!

Travel Details
  • HotelPanorama Hotel Prague. I highly recommend! It has the best views of the Prague skyline
  • Flights – British Airways

Both booked as a package deal on Expedia.

  • Currency – Czech Koruna. Some establishments will accept Euros but most will ask for Korunas.
  • Duration Needed – 2 full days (most sites are close to each other)
  • Best time to go – We went in August so we had the sun with a light summer breeze. I would avoid going in the bitter winter months (December to February)
