Christopher’s – Brunch Spot Review

I thought to try some more brunch spots over the summer instead of going to my usual watering holes so when my sister in law, Mel suggested we have a brunch date before seeing the new Lion King movie, I knew I had to go to work with finding a spot I had never been to.

Side note – Have you seen the new Lion King movie? How amazing was it?! Oh gosh, loved it so much and shed a few tears in the opening scene and of course when Mufasa dies. Sad times!

Ok back to brunching at Christopher’s.

Christopher’s is an American restaurant and martini bar, which offers weekend brunches. I feel like I had almost forgotten what a no frills dining room looked like until I walked into Christopher’s on that Saturday afternoon. It was very refreshing I must admit. No florals, no pinks, no colourful desserts, no fancy hot chocolates or lattés. Just easy, normal dining!

I legit googled weekend brunch spots in London and somewhere in the middle of all the suggestions, I spotted Christopher’s and because I had never heard of it, I read a few reviews and went on to make a reservation.

To note – Brunch only happens on weekends. Available Saturday 11am – 3pm, Sunday 11.30am – 3.30pm

Location

Address – 18 Wellington St, Covent Garden, London WC2E 7DD

It was so funny that we got there and realised it is right across from the Lyceum center, which is the popular house of Lion King’s theatre production. I mean, we were going to see Lion King movie after brunch but were brunching just across from its theatre production lol.

It is a 7 minutes walk from Covent Garden station and you are better off taking the tube or uber! I had to get the uber there because my train station was having a mare that day.

Ambiance

As I previously explained, it is very simple.

You are here strictly for the food and not to try and get the most perfect Instagram backdrop.

Menu

Typical brunch menu. Although there were different types of pancakes and eggs, Christopher’s paid homage to its American “roots” with mains like French Toast and Texas Grill. Notably, there was no English breakfast on the menu; they definitely wanted to stick to their “American-ness”

I was not too crazy about my pancakes. It was just ok and in all honesty, did not feel fresh at all. I have definitely had much better pancakes in other brunch spots. However, their French Toast was perfection! Mel enjoyed her Eggs Royale but admitted she’d had better eggs royales in other brunch spots.

We also ordered (well-done) fried eggs on the side which came out too well done and actually burnt. Who burns fried eggs? and even brings them out to serve?  This was quite disappointing to be honest and I still kick myself for not sending it back.

you can peep the burnt eggs :/
Service

This is where I’ll give them all the points. Service was lovely and the waiters who served us were polite and patient. I had asked for a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice but did not opt out of the usual ice, which comes with it. Once she brought my juice and I noticed it had ice, I asked if she could change it and she did not hesitate, she took it away and brought a fresh one with no ice.

Value for money

It’s quite reasonably priced. Our bill came to just under £50 and this was including the 12.5% service charge so it was typical London brunch spot pricing.

Mel mentioned that the Eggs Royale was pricier than other spots especially as it did not come with fries on the side (you had to pay for that as an extra side). However, my pancakes were average pancake price and French toast seemed sensibly priced.

Now, the age old question. Will I go there again? This, I cannot say a definite yes to. Whilst I loved that it had no frills and was just a normal, classic, dining spot, I did feel like I had eaten better brunches in a lot of the other spots I have been to. Maybe I’ll try the martini bar next time!

Until next time!
