If anyone told you that there was a canal in London, would you believe them? Be honest. When one thinks of canals, the cities that come to mind are most likely Venice, Amsterdam and maybe, Bruges. Discovering London’s canals with GoBoat London was the next thing on my list! Who knew that this wonderful city of London also had its very own canals! I told you that London packs a punch didn’t I?
I had heard about the GoBoat London tours for about a year and was actually supposed to go on one last summer. But life happened. So this year, I was 100% determined it had to be a part of my summer plans. I just had to hope for good weather (this is still the UK ehh!) and find a suitable date.
GoBoat London is a self-drive boating experience and is suitable for all ages. You are the captain, you pick your route and you steer your boat. There are currently 2 locations – Paddington and Kingston. I went to the Paddington location. The amazing thing is that you don’t need any prior boating experience. The captain just needs to be alert and sober and there is training given just before you board.
On a very early Saturday morning, we made our way to Paddington. Ok, to be honest, it was not that early. We had to be at the dock by 10.15am as our boat ride was 10.30am. We bought thetickets online a few weeks prior. There is the option of 1 hour for £79, 2 hours for £119 and 3 hours for £159. I knew 1 hour would be too short so 2 hours was the perfect duration! In discovering London’s canals with GoBoat London, the boat took us through Little Venice, Regent’s Canal, Maida Hill and even to Camden Lock! I tell you, 2 hours is perfect!
The boat has the capacity of up to 8 people. It was a family day out, we were 7 of us and it was very comfortable.
Getting There
We got the tube to Paddington station and walked about 10 minutes to Merchant Square. It was such a fun walk and we realised by the time we got to St Mary’s Hospital, that we were about to walk past Lindo Wing. THE Lindo Wingwhere Princes William and Harry were born. Also, where all of Prince William’s 3 children were born!
We went with our own picnic and Mr E was the Captain of the boat. This, he seemed to be very proud of. At some points, Bobo took charge of steering the boat. I, on the other hand, was happy to relax while the boat sailed lol. It definitely is a fun activity to do in London and one of the city’s hidden gems. The cost is not as steep especially when shared in a group.
Discovering London's Canals: Yay or Nay?
I recommend it for first dates (oh it’s a perfect first date). Also, for a family day out with kids and even pets! Under 16s are required to wear a life jacket and everyone is advised to stay seated throughout. The boat sails quite slowly so it does feel 100% safe when you are on. I got asked this a few times and I can confirm that I did not feel fear at any time.
The boat was sturdy and there were so many other people on their own rides out on the canals as well.
After the boat ride, we had a little walk around Paddington and had a pub lunch before heading home. It was definitely a fun experience and I highly recommend it if you are ever in London!
Meanwhile, I am enjoying writing so much about London. So much to see and do! It seems we are in the last days of summer now so I’m trying to milk it all. I hope you are too!!
