The most beautiful café in the world – New York Café, Budapest

Yes, in Budapest. Don’t believe me? Do your googles.

I had heard of the New York Café in Budapest but I never actually thought I’d ever go there. I just always thought it was one of those things you hear and know about but that’s just it.

New York Café is located in the luxury New York Palace Hotel. The building was constructed and opened to the public in 1894.

The reception in the New York Palace hotel. How stunning?!

The Café used to be the beloved spot for editors and writers in Budapest and it is rumoured that the most influential newspapers in Europe were edited there. It was restored to what it currently looks like in 2006. The menu is quite multicultural; infusing Austrian and Hungarian delicacies such as beef goulash, wiener schnitzel, sacher with an interesting splash of the American classic New York burger.

Reservation

Through its website and pretty straightforward. I will recommend you make a reservation as it does not really matter what day you are planning to visit, it is always busy AF. We visited on a Tuesday afternoon and there was a queue with at least 25 people on it :/

We had reserved a 3pm lunch date at the café as I had read about the long queues which go all the way out into the street so I knew to pre-book.

Getting There

Address – 1073 Budapest, Erzsebet krt. 9-11

The front of the New York Palace hotel

It was a 25 mins walk from our Vaci Utca located hotel which was literally off Liberty Bridge and in the city centre where all the shops are stationed. Let me tell you, I was not going to walk anywhere because, I cannot come and die especially in 35 degrees heat but Mr E has this fitness band thing that records how many steps he’s done for the day so you know what this means? We have been walking EVERYWHERE *cry with me*

Anyway, we eventually got there after 50 days and 50 nights, bang on 3pm.We got in and there was a long queue but thanks to our reservation, we were ushered past the queue straight to our seats. Thank Goodness I made this reservation!

So what makes New York Café the most beautiful in the world?

Ambiance

Think Grand, Boujee, Opulent, Artsy, European, Spectacular.

The view from the top of the stairs overlooking the Café

We sat down and I took it all in. Fancy mirrors, a quartet playing music in the background, everything you would expect from a 5 star café. It was all too beautiful. I mean I do love my afternoon tea so I have been to some of the most beautiful cafés during my travels but this one was different. Nothing too pretentious à la floral walls; just plain good old 19th century architecture. The walls looked like they dripped of gold, the paintings, the intricate carvings and all that art. Perfection!

The Quartet playing at the top of the stairs

See pictures. Pay attention to the details and think of the art. It reminded me of the art I had seen in the Sistine Chapel (Vatican City). So beautiful.

Let’s discuss Menu & Food

As I already explained it was a multi-cultural infusion. There were Austrian and Hungarian dishes, American burger and even the English Afternoon tea. Oh the dessert menu had so many lush options too. Have a look at the menu

We ordered 2 servings of the New York burger which came with fries on the side and because you never order just one main lol, we also ordered the Supreme Chicken with Carrot Puree and Baby Pak-Choi to share. To drink, I had an Apérol Spritz (I don’t know when I became the girl who always orders Apérol Spritz lol), Mr E had a glass of red wine. While I was having my Hungarian chocolate milkshake dessert, Mr E had a Hungarian beer.

I had read that the food was just alright but I’ll be very honest, I enjoyed my burger. I asked for well done, Mr E asked for medium rare; both came out perfectly. Our chicken was tender and very tasty. Zero complaints from us here.

Service

For a popular, boujee café, it was surprisingly very good. There was a section reserved for just the guests of the hotel but I wanted to get some pictures for the blog, I asked politely and they were fine with me going up there to get my pictures. Food came out in a timely manner, our orders were not mixed up, waiters were attentive and it was an overall lovely experience.

Had to strike a little pose as usual :/
Diptique candle burning at the entrance! BOUJEEEE lol

Now you’ve seen this, I dare you to show me a more gorgeous classic café, I’ll wait…..

Bisous, ‘Bugo x

I love how it takes you back in time and the fact you mentioned it’s not pretentious as we see in most modern restuarants.
